Sophia's Story

Wine has been a huge part of my life for over twenty years, but my journey into the industry did not begin in a classroom. It began in a vineyard.

In 2005, my father planted a commercial vineyard in Nova Scotia, Canada, and I quickly became involved in every aspect of wine production. From vineyard work and harvests to bottling, tastings and events, I developed a fascination with understanding every aspect.

That fascination took me around the world, exploring wine regions before spending several years working for one of Manchester's leading independent wine merchants. It was there that I discovered something I loved just as much as wine: helping people understand and enjoy it.

In 2016, I became a certified Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Educator. Since then, I have delivered WSET courses, wine education programmes, trade training and events across the UK and internationally. Today, I run my own wine education business, The Drink Talking, helping both wine professionals and enthusiasts build their knowledge, confidence and enjoyment of wine.

I believe wine should be accessible, engaging and fun. Whether I am teaching a qualification, hosting a tasting or working with hospitality teams, my goal is always the same: to create an environment where people feel comfortable asking questions, sharing opinions and building confidence in talking about wine.

When people feel confident, learning becomes memorable, wine becomes more enjoyable and great conversations naturally follow.

What types of events does Sophia host?

I'm at my best when I'm helping a room of people feel comfortable, engaged and connected. Whether your guests are complete beginners or seasoned wine lovers, I'll guide them through an entertaining and interactive experience that combines wine knowledge, personal taste discovery and a few belly laughs along the way.

From a group of ten to an audience of hundreds, my role is part educator, part presenter and part host, creating experiences that leave guests talking long after the last glass has been poured.

My speciality is creating engaging wine experiences that bring people together. Whether I'm teaching a professional qualification, entertaining a room full of guests or helping a business create a memorable customer event, my goal is always to make people feel relaxed, involved and excited to learn.

Can Sophia host virtual events?

How far in advance should we book?

As a general rule, booking around six months in advance gives you the best chance of securing your preferred date, particularly for corporate events, private tastings and busy periods such as Christmas.

That said, it's always worth getting in touch, whatever your timeframe. I occasionally have availability for last-minute bookings and will always do my best to accommodate your event if I can.

The earlier you enquire, the more flexibility we'll have when planning your ideal date and experience.

How much does it cost to book Sophia?

The cost depends on the type of event you're looking to create.

For corporate wine tastings and private events, pricing is usually based on the overall experience, including factors such as guest numbers, wines, food pairings, location and event duration. These events typically have a minimum spend of £900.

For speaking engagements, presenting, hosting and freelance wine education, fees vary depending on the nature of the event and the time required.

The best way to receive an accurate quote is to get in touch with a few details about your event. I'll then recommend the most suitable format and create a proposal that works for your objectives and budget.

Does Sophia travel outside Yorkshire?

Yes. While most of my events take place in Yorkshire and the surrounding areas, I am happy to travel further afield for the right event.

Travel costs are quoted separately, and for events requiring a significant journey, overnight accommodation may also need to be included. Every event is different, so the best thing to do is get in touch with your location, guest numbers and event requirements.
