WSET in Yorkshire: Which Level Should I Start With?

If you love wine or work in hospitality and want to gain professional knowledge, WSET courses offer a clear path to understanding wine from beginner to expert. With several levels available, it can be tricky to know where to start. This guide will help you choose the right WSET level ifor you.

Understanding WSET Levels

The Wine and Spirit Education Trust, or WSET, provides structured courses that build your wine knowledge step by step. Each level is designed for different experience levels and learning goals.

Level 1 Award in Wines

Level 1 is perfect for anyone who knows nothing or very little about wine. We take you through the wine-making processes for red, white, and rosé wines, ensuring the basics are thoroughly understood. This course is ideal for:

  • Anyone looking for a gentle introduction to the fundamentals of wine

  • People working in hospitality or the wine industry who have little prior knowledge but need to be able to explain and discuss wine confidently

Level 1 is a one-day course where all content and the exam are completed on the same day. No prior study is required. It covers a small selection of principal grape varieties, usually around 8–12, and key regions, giving a simple but solid understanding of wine styles. You also learn about food and wine pairings.

Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits

Level 2 is also suitable for beginners, and you do not need to have taken Level 1 to enrol. While Level 2 is more intensive than Level 1, anyone with interest and motivation can succeed. It covers at least 30 grape varieties and over 70 geographical indications or regions, providing a much deeper understanding of international wines and styles.

This course is ideal for:

  • Beginners who want a more detailed study of wine

  • Hospitality or wine industry professionals who want to build a professional understanding quickly

A key difference between Level 1 and Level 2 is the structure and depth. Level 2 involves 16 hours of in-class tuition plus around 8 hours of recommended study outside the classroom. Reading the Level 2 textbook before the course is also helpful. While Level 2 introduces a lot of grape names, wine regions, and styles, it is achievable with focus and enthusiasm!

Like Level 1, Level 2 covers wine-making, food and wine pairings, and grape varieties. However, Level 2 is multi-week and much more detailed than the one-day Level 1 course.

Level 3 Award in Wines

Level 3 is for those who want in-depth wine knowledge. You should have WSET Level 2 or equivalent experience. This level focuses on advanced tasting techniques, detailed wine regions, production methods, and the ability to evaluate and compare wines like a professional.

Tips for Choosing Your Starting Level

  1. Consider your experience If you know very little about wine, Level 1 is a great starting point.

  2. Remember Level 1 is not required You can enrol directly in Level 2 if you are motivated and ready for a more detailed study.

  3. Assess your time and commitment Level 2 requires more study outside the classroom, while Level 1 is all done in one day.

  4. Be honest about your interest Level 2 is intense, but motivation and curiosity go a long way.
